Books

My published books cover English, literacy, writing and inclusive music education.

Most grew from teaching materials and approaches developed through direct work with learners. They are designed to make complex skills clearer through explicit explanation, structured examples and carefully sequenced practice, while still allowing learners and teachers flexibility in how they are used.

The books below are available through Amazon.

English and Literacy Books

Kate Coldrick’s Guide to Functional Skills Level 1 Writing

Kate Coldrick’s Guide to Functional Skills Level 1 Writing

A structured guide to the writing skills required for Functional Skills English Level 1.

The book breaks writing tasks into manageable stages and uses clear explanations, models and guided practice to help learners understand what different tasks are asking them to do. It is designed for learners who benefit from explicit teaching and a predictable structure, and can be used for independent study, one-to-one tuition or alongside a Functional Skills course.

Topics include planning, sentence construction, organisation, audience and purpose, and the development of complete written responses.

The Structured Descriptive Writing Workbook

The Structured Descriptive Writing Workbook

A step-by-step workbook for developing descriptive writing.

The book is designed for learners who have ideas but find it difficult to turn them into a complete piece of writing, as well as those who experience anxiety around open-ended tasks. It makes the process of descriptive writing more visible by breaking it into smaller skills and providing models before asking learners to work more independently.

It can be used for GCSE English Language preparation, intervention, one-to-one tuition or with younger learners beginning to develop the foundations of descriptive writing.

Understanding English Through Word Parts

Understanding English Through Word Parts

A practical introduction to using prefixes, suffixes, roots and other word parts to support vocabulary, spelling and reading.

Rather than treating every unfamiliar word as something separate to memorise, the book encourages learners to recognise recurring structures and relationships between words. This can provide another route into understanding increasingly complex vocabulary.

It is particularly suited to learners who benefit from explicit teaching of the patterns within English, and can also be used by teachers, tutors and parents looking for practical ways to introduce morphology.

Inclusive Music Education

Music for Every Learner: Inclusive Music Teaching and Curriculum Design for Children and Young People with SEND

Music for Every Learner: Inclusive Music Teaching and Curriculum Design for Children and Young People with SEND

Music for Every Learner explores how music teaching and curriculum design can be made accessible to children and young people with a wide range of needs.

The book grew from my experience of developing a music curriculum for autistic pupils aged from early childhood through to secondary age. It considers how musical progression can be planned when chronological age, communication, motor skills, sensory needs and musical development do not necessarily follow the same path.

Topics include participation, musical progression, curriculum design, assessment and ways of revisiting skills without simply repeating the same activities.

Music for Every Learner – Two-Volume Edition

The material from Music for Every Learner is also available as two separate volumes for readers who prefer to work with the book in smaller sections.

Music for Every Learner – Volume 1

Music for Every Learner – Volume 1

Volume 1 covers the foundations of inclusive music teaching and the development of musical skills.

It explores how learners can participate meaningfully in music at different levels and how teachers can build progression from individual starting points rather than relying solely on age-based expectations.

Music for Every Learner – Volume 2

Music for Every Learner – Volume 2

Volume 2 develops the ideas into curriculum planning, progression and wider approaches to inclusive music education.

It considers how teachers can build coherent musical learning over time while allowing for different patterns of development, communication and participation.

On the Skyline: Women Rewritten

On the Skyline: Women Rewritten sits outside my educational publishing and brings together a different strand of my writing.

Choosing the Right Book

If you are looking primarily for support with English qualifications, Kate Coldrick’s Guide to Functional Skills Level 1 Writing provides a structured route through Functional Skills writing, while The Structured Descriptive Writing Workbook focuses on the development of descriptive and creative writing.

For literacy work, Understanding English Through Word Parts focuses on vocabulary, spelling and morphology.

For teachers working in music and SEND, Music for Every Learner provides a broader approach to inclusive curriculum design and musical progression. The complete edition contains the whole book in one volume, while the two-volume edition divides the material into smaller sections.
